Dr. Elemér Mohos, Ph.D

„I have been working for the Surgery Department at Veszprém County Hospital since 1989 as a Surgeon, then as a Chief Thoracic Surgeon. After 2007 I worked as a Chief Physician at Oberwart Central Hospital, where the main profile of surgery is the advanced laparoscopic surgery, and within it metabolic surgery. We performed there from 80 to 100 laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgeries. Our patients had a follow-up visit once in three months. Since 1st July 2012 I have been working full time as a Chief Physician and the Head of Department for the Department of General and Vascular Surgery at Veszprém County Hospital. I personally performed the aforesaid surgery over 320 times until August 2013. If the Austrian cases also taken into account, we have had over 650 interventions so far. As we experienced superb results in Austria we were the first to start the laparoscopic gastric bypass and gastric sleeve surgeries at the General and Vascular Surgery at Veszprém County Hospital in 2010. There have been 220 bypass and 25 sleeve resections in Hungary hitherto. Our patients have had outstanding results which resemble the Austrian data; the surgery has helped with weight loss, the quality of their lives improved, and obesity-related diseases like Type 2 Diabetes, hypertension, acid reflux, or locomotor disorders, have been alleviated. There are cc. 200,000 Gastric Bypass Surgeries around the world. However, statistically speaking, rates of obesity among the Hungarian population display similar tendencies to the rates among the population of developed countries. That is the reason why I am firmly convinced that the Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass Surgery, which is considered to be a new intervention in Hungary but has had a longer-than-the-past 40-year history in the United States, has its place among other surgeries in our country.”
